According to a survey conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), there are an estimated 46 million "birdwatchers or birders, 16 years of age or older" in the U.S. Of these, the vast majority (88 percent) bird at home, while 40 percent take at least an occasional trip a mile or more from home to watch birds. Early May is prime time for Wisconsin bird watchers as many migratory species pass through the area. In recognition of this fact, as well as the plight of many neotropical migrants that rely on diminishing habitat at both ends of their yearly flight, Saturday, May 8 has been designated International Migratory Bird Day
